The Disputed Country
The 170 yr old border anomaly, one of Australia’s longest running border disputes, originating in the late 1840’s. In 1836 it was declared 141° longitude East would be the Eastern Boundary of SA.
Chosen surveyors, wade and White marked the boundary starting from Tyer’s marked at Discovery Bay. Assumptions over the marker in Sand Dunes, the line ended up approx. 3km west of 141°.
Over the years it was disputed whether it was the correct line. SA accused Victoria of appropriating about 1,800sq kms of its land. The High Court in 1914, judged the border to stand as marked by Wade ad White 1847-1850.
Since the Pandemic COVID-19 the border issue has be reignited.
