The Wreck of the Admella
The SS Admella was sailing from Adelaide to Melbourne when it struck Carpenters Reef on the Southern coastline of South Australia in the early hours of 6 August 1859.
After eight days clinging to the wreckage battered by wind, rain and huge waves 24 people were rescued. Of the six racehorses on board only the champion The Barber managed to survive by swimming ashore.
The loss of 89 lives makes the wreck on of the worst maritime disasters in Australian history
